Indications

Padimate O is a sunscreen ingredient found in some lotions, creams and lip balms. It helps protect the skin against sunburn caused by ultraviolet B (UVB) rays and, as part of a full sun protection routine, helps reduce sun damage to the skin.

How It Works

Padimate O is an organic (chemical) UV filter related to PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid). It absorbs UVB light, which is the main cause of sunburn, and releases the energy as a small amount of heat, so less UV reaches the living layers of the skin. It gives little protection against UVA rays, so it is usually combined with other filters such as Titanium Dioxide.

Dosage and Administration

For external use on the skin only. Apply generously and evenly to all exposed skin about 15 minutes before going into the sun. Reapply at least every 2 hours, and after swimming, sweating heavily or towel drying. Follow the directions on the product label. For babies under 6 months, ask a doctor and keep them out of direct sun.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known. Some medicines, such as Doxycycline, Tetracycline, Hydrochlorothiazide and some acne treatments, make the skin more sensitive to sunlight; sunscreen helps but extra care is still needed. Avoid applying together with other products that irritate the skin.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to Padimate O, PABA or related compounds (such as Benzocaine or some sulfonamide-type substances) because cross-reactions can occur.
  • Do not apply to broken, infected or badly irritated skin.

Side Effects

Most people use it without problems. Some may get skin redness, itching, stinging or a rash at the site of use. Allergic or photo-allergic reactions (a rash that appears on skin exposed to sunlight) can occur, and it may stain some fabrics.

Stop using it and get urgent medical help if you develop widespread rash, blistering, swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Only a very small amount is absorbed through the skin and normal use on the skin is not expected to harm a pregnancy or a breastfed baby. Avoid applying it on the nipple area before breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any concerns.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes; if it gets in the eyes, rinse well with water.
  • Sunscreen alone does not give complete protection; also wear protective clothing and a hat and avoid strong midday sun.
  • Check the label for the SPF and broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection.
  • Keep away from flames if the product contains alcohol.

Overdose

Overuse on the skin is unlikely to cause harm apart from irritation. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, rinse the mouth and contact a doctor or poison centre.

Therapeutic Class

Sunscreen agent, UVB filter (PABA derivative).

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and heat, with the cap tightly closed, out of the reach of children.
