Indications
Pelargonium sidoides is a South African geranium whose root extract is used as a herbal medicine for the symptoms of acute respiratory infections, especially acute bronchitis, the common cold, sore throat and sinus congestion. Some clinical studies suggest it may shorten the duration and ease the severity of cough and cold symptoms, although the quality of evidence is moderate to low. It does not replace antibiotics when a bacterial infection needs them.
How It Works
The root extract contains natural compounds such as coumarins and polyphenols. These are thought to help the body fight viruses, make it harder for bacteria to stick to the lining of the airways, and help the tiny hairs (cilia) in the airways clear mucus more effectively.
Dosage and Administration
Take by mouth as directed on the label, usually three times a day, starting at the first signs of illness. Measure liquid forms carefully with the device supplied. Treatment is usually continued for a few days after symptoms improve, but should not normally go beyond 2 to 3 weeks without a doctor’s advice. Use in children only if the label covers their age, or as directed by a doctor.
Interactions
Because it contains coumarin-type compounds, it may in theory increase the effect of blood thinners such as Warfarin or Acenocoumarol and raise the risk of bleeding. Liquid forms may contain alcohol, which can interact with Metronidazole and some other medicines. Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you take.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Pelargonium or any ingredient of the product.
- Severe liver disease.
- Increased bleeding tendency or use of blood-thinning medicines, unless a doctor agrees.
Side Effects
Possible effects include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhoea, mild nosebleeds or bleeding gums, and allergic skin reactions. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported.
Get urgent medical help if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual bleeding or bruising, swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing. Also see a doctor promptly if you have a high fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, or cough with blood or with thick green or yellow phlegm, or if symptoms do not improve within a week.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it should be avoided unless a doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
Stop taking it and see a doctor if signs of liver problems appear. People with liver disease, bleeding disorders or upcoming surgery should ask a doctor first. Check the label for alcohol content if you must avoid alcohol.
Overdose
Taking too much may increase stomach upset or bleeding tendency. Seek medical advice and take the pack with you.
