Indications
Polyethylene glycol 400 is used in lubricant eye drops (artificial tears), often together with Propylene glycol. It relieves dry eyes and the burning, gritty, tired or irritated feeling caused by dryness, screen use, wind, air conditioning or dust.
How It Works
It forms a thin, soothing, moisture-holding layer over the surface of the eye. This supports the natural tear film and protects the eye from further irritation.
Dosage and Administration
Put 1 or 2 drops in the affected eye or eyes as needed, commonly 3 or 4 times a day, or as the doctor advises. Wash your hands first, tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid and look up while putting in the drop. Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface. Shake before use if the label says so. Single-use vials are opened just before use and thrown away afterwards.
Interactions
No important interactions are known. If you use other eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between them; using the lubricant last is usually best.
Contraindications
Allergy to polyethylene glycol, Propylene glycol or any other ingredient, including preservatives, in the product.
Side Effects
Brief blurred vision after putting in the drops, mild stinging or discomfort, and sticky eyelashes.
Get urgent medical help if you have:
- Eye pain or a change in vision.
- Redness or irritation that gets worse or lasts more than 3 days.
- Swelling of the eyelids, face or throat, or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little reaches the body, so these drops are generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if unsure.
Precautions and Warnings
Remove contact lenses before use unless the product says it is suitable for lenses; wait about 15 minutes before putting them back in. Do not drive until any blurred vision clears. Do not use the drops if the solution changes colour or becomes cloudy. Throw the bottle away after the period stated on the pack once opened. See a doctor if dryness continues, as it can have other causes.
Overdose
Using extra drops is unlikely to cause harm; rinse the eye with clean water if it feels uncomfortable. If the drops are swallowed, serious harm is unlikely; seek advice if a child swallows a large amount.
Therapeutic Class
Ocular lubricant (artificial tears).
Storage
Store below 30°C, away from light and out of the reach of children. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
