Indications

Poppy seeds are the tiny seeds of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), known in Unani as Khashkhash. They are a common food and an ingredient in Unani compound tonics (majoon) traditionally used for general weakness, brain and nerve weakness, poor sleep, dry cough and, in some formulas, male sexual weakness. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

The seeds are rich in oil, protein, calcium and other minerals, which Unani tradition regards as nourishing and calming. The seeds themselves contain no meaningful amount of opium, but the seed surface can carry traces of opium alkaloids such as morphine and codeine from the plant. Traces are usually very small in cleaned, food grade seed.

Dosage and Administration

Take products containing poppy seed as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Do not use poppy seed teas or soaks of unwashed seeds, which can contain dangerous amounts of morphine.

Interactions

  • It may add to the effect of sedatives, sleeping pills, opioid painkillers such as Tramadol or Codeine, and alcohol.
  • Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to poppy seed or any ingredient.
  • People recovering from opioid dependence, or on opioid substitution treatment, should avoid medicinal poppy products.
  • Children, unless advised by a practitioner.

Side Effects

Products used as directed are usually well tolerated. Possible effects include mild drowsiness, constipation or stomach upset. Allergy to poppy seed is uncommon but can be serious.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, widespread rash), or signs of opioid effect such as extreme sleepiness, very slow breathing or pinpoint pupils.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Poppy seeds in normal food amounts are safe. Medicinal compound products have not been studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding; ask your doctor before use.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Eating poppy seed products can cause a positive urine drug test for opiates; tell the testing service if you have taken them.
  • Do not drive if you feel drowsy.
  • Long lasting weakness, poor sleep or sexual problems should be checked by a doctor.

Overdose

Very large amounts, especially of unwashed seeds or seed tea, can cause opioid poisoning with heavy drowsiness, slow breathing and loss of consciousness, which can be fatal. Seek emergency medical help straight away.
