Indications
Potassium bitartrate is one of the active ingredients, together with Lactic Acid and Citric Acid, in non-hormonal vaginal contraceptive gels. The gel is used by women to prevent pregnancy when applied before vaginal sex. Potassium bitartrate (also known as cream of tartar) is also widely used in foods and baking.
How It Works
The vagina is normally acidic, which makes sperm less active. Semen is alkaline and raises vaginal pH after ejaculation, helping sperm survive. The gel keeps the vagina acidic (around pH 3.5 to 4.5) even in the presence of semen, which reduces sperm movement so they are less able to reach and fertilise an egg. It contains no hormones.
Dosage and Administration
Insert one pre-filled applicator of gel into the vagina immediately before, or up to 1 hour before, each act of vaginal sex, as directed on the label. A new dose is needed for each act of sex, even within the same hour. It can be used at any time during the menstrual cycle. It is not meant for use after sex as emergency contraception. For best protection, follow the instructions exactly; using it together with condoms gives additional protection.
Interactions
- No important drug interactions are known.
- It may be used with condoms and most vaginal products; avoid using a vaginal ring at the same time unless your doctor advises.
- Ask your pharmacist before using other vaginal medicines such as antifungal creams.
Contraindications

Get urgent medical help if you have pain or burning when passing urine with fever, back or side pain, blood in the urine, signs of a severe allergic reaction, or severe pelvic pain.
Pregnancy and Lactation
It is a contraceptive and is not for use during pregnancy; stop using it if you become pregnant. Very little is absorbed into the body, and it is not expected to affect breastfeeding, but ask your doctor if unsure.
Precautions and Warnings
- It is less effective than many other methods; ask your doctor about the most suitable option for you.
- It does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections; use condoms for protection.

Overdose
