Indications

Prasarani Sandhan is a classical Ayurvedic liquid preparation (a sandhan, meaning a naturally fermented herbal medicine) made mainly from Prasarani (Paederia foetida, also called skunk vine or gandhabhadulia) together with other herbs. It is traditionally used for joint pain and stiffness, rheumatism, back pain, sciatica and other conditions that Ayurveda links to an imbalance of vata (the element of movement in the body). Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it does not cure arthritis.

How It Works

In Ayurveda, Prasarani is believed to calm vata and to ease pain, stiffness and swelling in joints and muscles. Laboratory studies suggest the plant has some anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Fermentation produces a small amount of natural alcohol, which helps extract and preserve the herbal ingredients.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. Sandhan preparations are usually taken after meals, often mixed with an equal amount of water. Shake the bottle well before use.

Interactions

  • It contains natural alcohol: avoid with Metronidazole, Tinidazole and other medicines that react with alcohol, and with sedatives.
  • Tell your doctor if you take pain relievers, steroids or blood-thinning medicines such as Warfarin.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Children, unless a practitioner advises it.
  • People who must avoid alcohol, including those with liver disease or recovering from alcohol dependence.
  • Known allergy to any ingredient of the preparation.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate it well. Possible effects include stomach upset, heartburn, nausea and a feeling of warmth. Some products contain sugar or jaggery, which can raise blood sugar.

Get urgent medical help if you have a hot, red and very swollen joint with fever, sudden severe pain, chest pain, vomiting blood or black stools, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, because it contains alcohol and its herbal safety has not been studied in these situations.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Joint pain can have many causes, such as gout, infection or rheumatoid arthritis. See a doctor for a proper diagnosis, especially if a joint is swollen or pain is severe.
  • People with diabetes should check the sugar content on the label.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause stomach upset and effects of alcohol such as drowsiness. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
