Indications
This is a complete nutritional formula (powder or liquid) that provides protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins and minerals in balanced amounts. It is used as a meal replacement or supplement for adults who are not eating enough, during recovery from illness or surgery, for older people with poor appetite or weight loss, for people with increased needs, and, in specially designed versions, for people with diabetes who need slower-release carbohydrate.
How It Works
The formula supplies the same main nutrients as a balanced meal in an easy-to-take drink. Protein helps maintain and repair muscle and tissues; carbohydrate and fat supply energy; and the vitamins and minerals support normal body functions such as immunity, bone health and blood formation. Diabetes-friendly versions use carbohydrates and fibre that raise blood sugar more slowly.
Dosage and Administration
Prepare and use as directed on the label: usually the stated number of level scoops mixed into the stated volume of cool, boiled water, taken 1 to 3 times a day between or in place of meals. The exact amount depends on your needs, so follow your doctor’s or dietitian’s advice. Do not use for infants; adult formulas are not suitable for babies.
Interactions
No important medicine interactions are expected. The vitamin K content may affect people taking Warfarin, so keep intake steady. Minerals in the formula can reduce absorption of some antibiotics and Levothyroxine if taken at exactly the same time.
Contraindications
- Infants and young children (unless a doctor specifically advises a suitable version)
- Galactosaemia or known allergy to milk protein or soy, depending on the formula
- Conditions where the gut cannot be used for feeding
Side Effects
Most people tolerate it well. Some may have:
- Bloating, wind or mild stomach cramps
- Diarrhoea or constipation, especially when starting
- Nausea if taken too quickly
- Raised blood sugar with standard versions in people with diabetes
Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash, or if you develop severe vomiting or abdominal pain.
Pregnancy and Lactation
It can be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding as part of the diet if a doctor or dietitian recommends it. It does not replace a prenatal vitamin and should not be taken in place of normal meals without advice.
Precautions and Warnings
- People with diabetes should use the diabetes version and monitor blood sugar.
- People with kidney or liver disease may need a specialised formula; ask your doctor.
- Prepare with clean water and utensils; use within the time stated on the label.
- Not a medicine; it does not cure illness.
Overdose
Taking much more than advised may cause diarrhoea, bloating, weight gain and, over time, excess intake of some vitamins and minerals. Reduce the amount and seek advice if symptoms persist.
