Indications
Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) seed oil or seed extract is used as a herbal supplement. It is traditionally and commonly used to relieve urinary symptoms of a mildly enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), such as frequent urination, weak flow and getting up at night, and to support bladder health, including mild overactive bladder. Some studies show modest symptom relief, but it does not shrink the prostate and evidence is limited.
How It Works
Pumpkin seeds contain plant sterols, fatty acids, vitamin E, zinc and other compounds. These are thought to reduce mild swelling, may affect hormone activity in the prostate and may help the bladder muscle work more smoothly.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label, usually once or twice daily with meals. Benefits, if any, usually appear after several weeks of regular use.
Interactions
- No significant drug interactions are well known.
- Tell your doctor if you take other medicines for the prostate or bladder, such as Tamsulosin or Finasteride, or diuretics (water tablets).
Contraindications
- Known allergy to pumpkin or pumpkin seeds.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Mild stomach upset or loose stools may occur. Allergic reactions are rare.
Get urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine at all, have blood in the urine, severe pain, fever with urinary symptoms, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Pumpkin seeds eaten as food are safe, but there is not enough information on concentrated supplements in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid unless your doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- Urinary symptoms can also be caused by infection, stones or prostate cancer; see a doctor for proper diagnosis before self treating.
- Have regular prostate check ups as advised by your doctor.
- Do not stop prescribed prostate medicines without medical advice.
Overdose
Serious toxicity is not expected. Large amounts may cause stomach upset or diarrhoea.
