Indications
Puncture Vine (Tribulus terrestris, known as Gokshura) is a herbal extract made from the fruit or whole plant. It is traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Unani practice to support male sexual desire and performance, as a general tonic for strength and stamina, and for urinary complaints such as burning urine and small kidney stones. It is also marketed for male fertility and sports performance. Scientific evidence is limited and mixed: some small studies suggest a modest effect on sexual desire, but it has not been shown to raise testosterone reliably or build muscle.
How It Works
The plant contains natural compounds called steroidal saponins (such as protodioscin) and flavonoids. These are thought to have mild effects on sexual function, a mild water-tablet (diuretic) effect that increases urine flow, and antioxidant effects. The exact way it works in people is not well understood.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner, usually with or after food. Do not exceed the recommended dose. It is not meant for children.
Interactions
- It may lower blood sugar; check sugar levels if you take diabetes medicines such as Metformin, Gliclazide or Insulin.
- It may lower blood pressure; take care with blood pressure medicines.
- Its diuretic effect may raise blood levels of Lithium.
- Because of possible hormone effects, ask a doctor before using it with hormone treatments.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Hormone-sensitive conditions such as prostate cancer or breast cancer.
- Allergy to Tribulus or any ingredient.
Side Effects
Usually mild: stomach upset, cramps, nausea, diarrhoea or trouble sleeping. Rarely, enlarged breast tissue in men and liver or kidney problems have been reported with high doses.
Get urgent medical help if you notice yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, very little urine, severe stomach pain, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy: animal studies suggest it may harm the developing baby. Avoid while breastfeeding, as safety is unknown.
Precautions and Warnings
- Problems with erections or fertility can be linked to diabetes, heart disease or hormone problems. See a doctor rather than relying on this product.
- Kidney stones with severe pain, fever or blood in the urine need medical care.
- Stop taking it at least 2 weeks before surgery, as it may affect blood sugar and blood pressure.
- Athletes should know that some supplements may be contaminated with banned substances.
Overdose
High doses may cause stomach upset and, rarely, liver or kidney injury. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken.
