Indications
Pygeum is an extract from the bark of the African cherry tree (Prunus africana). It is used as a herbal supplement to help relieve urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland in older men), such as a weak urine stream, needing to pass urine often, and getting up at night to urinate. It is often combined with other herbs in kidney and prostate support products. Some studies suggest a modest benefit, but the evidence is limited and it does not shrink the prostate reliably.
How It Works
Pygeum bark contains plant sterols, fatty acids and other compounds that are thought to reduce inflammation in the prostate and the bladder neck and to improve how well the bladder empties. The exact way it works is not fully understood.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. In studies, standardised Pygeum extract has commonly been used at 100 to 200 mg per day, divided into one or two doses, taken with food. Benefits, if any, may take several weeks to appear.
Interactions
No serious interactions are well known. Tell your doctor if you take other medicines for the prostate (such as Tamsulosin or Finasteride), as your doctor will want to know about all treatments you use.

- Known allergy to Pygeum or any other ingredient of the product.

It is usually well tolerated. Possible side effects include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and headache.

- Do not stop prescribed prostate medicines without your doctor’s advice.
- Choose products from reliable makers, as the quality of herbal extracts varies.
