Indications
Qurs Gulnar is a traditional Unani tablet (qurs means tablet) whose main ingredient is gulnar, the dried flower of the pomegranate tree (Punica granatum), usually combined with other astringent herbs. It is traditionally used for loose motions (diarrhoea), dysentery, and to help reduce minor bleeding such as from bleeding piles or heavy periods. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.
How It Works
Pomegranate flowers are rich in tannins, which have an astringent effect: they tighten tissues and the lining of the gut, which may reduce watery stools and minor oozing of blood. Some plant compounds in pomegranate also show antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, with water. While you have diarrhoea, drink plenty of fluids and use oral rehydration salts (ORS) to replace lost water and salts.
Interactions
Tannin-rich herbs can reduce the absorption of other medicines and of iron supplements taken at the same time, so keep at least 2 hours between them. Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners such as Warfarin or any long-term medicine.
Contraindications
- Allergy to pomegranate or any other ingredient.
- Long-standing constipation.
- Severe diarrhoea with high fever, blood in the stool or dehydration, which needs a doctor first.
- Children, unless a practitioner advises it.
Side Effects
Constipation, stomach discomfort, nausea or a dry mouth may occur. Allergic reactions are uncommon.
Get urgent medical help if you have heavy bleeding from the back passage or vagina, black or bloody stools, signs of dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Avoid use unless a doctor advises it. Bleeding during pregnancy always needs prompt medical care.
Precautions and Warnings
Bleeding from the back passage, heavy periods and diarrhoea lasting more than 2 to 3 days should be checked by a doctor, as they can have serious causes. Do not use it to hide symptoms. Stop using it if constipation develops.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause constipation and stomach upset. If a large amount is swallowed, especially by a child, get medical advice.
