Indications
Qurs Muhazzil is a Unani herbal tablet (qurs means tablet; muhazzil means slimming). It is traditionally used as an aid to weight reduction and to reduce excess body fat, together with diet and exercise. Scientific evidence that it causes meaningful weight loss is limited, and it should not be relied on alone.
How It Works
In Unani medicine, the herbs in this preparation are believed to improve digestion and metabolism, reduce appetite and help the body clear excess fat and fluid. Some slimming preparations contain herbs with a mild laxative or water-passing effect. The exact ingredients vary between makers, so check the label.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually with water. Combine it with a balanced, lower-calorie diet and regular physical activity. Do not take more than advised in the hope of faster results.
Interactions
- If it has a laxative or water-passing effect, it may lower potassium levels and interact with Digoxin, diuretics and heart rhythm medicines.
- It may affect blood sugar; people taking diabetes medicines should monitor their sugar levels.
- It may reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time; take them a few hours apart.

- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Children and teenagers.
- Eating disorders or people who are underweight.
- Known allergy to any ingredient.
Side Effects
Possible effects include stomach upset, loose stools, increased urination, dry mouth, headache and weakness. Some people may feel restless or have trouble sleeping.
Get urgent medical help if you have a fast or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, severe diarrhoea with dizziness or weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Weight loss is not advised during these times, and the safety of the herbs is not established.
Precautions and Warnings
- Weight gain can be caused by thyroid problems, hormone conditions or medicines. See a doctor for a check-up, especially if you gain weight quickly.
- People with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease should talk to a doctor before use.
- Be careful with slimming products from unknown sources; some have been found to contain hidden drugs.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause severe diarrhoea, dehydration, weakness and changes in heart rhythm. Seek medical help if a large amount has been taken.
