Indications
Qurs Mulayin is a traditional Unani laxative tablet (qurs means tablet, mulayin means softening or laxative). It contains Scammony (a strong plant purgative), together with Lavender and Fennel, which are traditionally added to reduce griping and wind. It is traditionally used for:
- Occasional constipation
- Clearing the bowels when a short-term laxative is needed
Scientific evidence is limited. Scammony is a potent purgative, so this product must be used with care and only for short periods.
How It Works
Scammony resin irritates the lining of the bowel, which makes the bowel muscles contract more strongly and draws water into the stool, causing a loose bowel movement. Fennel and Lavender are traditionally regarded as calming the gut and easing cramps and wind.
Dosage and Administration
Take only as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually at bedtime with water. Do not exceed the label dose, and do not use for more than a few days without advice. Not suitable for children, the elderly or frail people unless a practitioner specifically advises it.
Interactions
- Diarrhoea from strong laxatives can lower potassium, which increases the risk of side effects from Digoxin and some heart rhythm medicines, and adds to the potassium loss caused by diuretics such as Furosemide and by steroids.
- It can reduce the absorption of other medicines; keep a gap of at least 2 hours.
- Do not combine with other laxatives unless advised.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Children
- Stomach pain of unknown cause, nausea or vomiting, suspected appendicitis or bowel blockage
- Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis)
- Dehydration, or known allergy to any ingredient
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- Stomach cramps, griping pain and watery stools
- Nausea
- Weakness and dizziness from loss of fluid and salts
Get urgent medical help if you have severe or continuing stomach pain, blood in the stools, vomiting, muscle weakness or an irregular heartbeat, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness on standing, very little urine or confusion.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy, as strong purgatives may trigger contractions of the womb. Do not use while breastfeeding. Ask a doctor about safer options for constipation.
Precautions and Warnings
- Try fluids, fibre and physical activity first for constipation.
- Regular use can make the bowel dependent on laxatives and upset body salts.
- See a doctor if constipation is new, lasts more than 2 weeks, or comes with weight loss or bleeding.
- People with heart or kidney disease should not use it without medical advice.
Overdose
Overdose can cause severe diarrhoea, stomach pain, dehydration and dangerous salt imbalance. Seek medical help straight away, especially for children or older people, and take the pack with you.
