Indications
Qurs Pech is a traditional Unani tablet (qurs means tablet; pech or pechish refers to dysentery and griping stomach pain) made from a blend of herbs. It is traditionally used for loose motions with mucus, griping or cramping stomach pain, and as a supportive remedy in mild dysentery. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited. It does not replace oral rehydration solution or proper medical treatment for infections such as amoebic or bacterial dysentery.
How It Works
Herbs in such formulas are traditionally chosen for astringent effects (tightening the gut lining and reducing fluid loss), antispasmodic effects (relaxing gut muscle to ease cramps), and mild antimicrobial activity. The exact effects depend on the formula and have not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, usually for a few days only. Drink plenty of fluids and use oral rehydration solution (ORS) to replace lost water and salts. Not for children unless a doctor advises it.
Interactions
Astringent herbs may reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time; take this product at least 2 hours apart from your other medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any ingredient.
- Constipation or suspected bowel blockage.
- High fever with bloody diarrhoea, unless a doctor advises it.
- Children, unless a doctor advises it.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include constipation, bloating, nausea and mild stomach discomfort.
Get urgent medical help if you notice blood in the stool, high fever, severe or worsening stomach pain, signs of dehydration (very dry mouth, little or no urine, dizziness, sunken eyes), repeated vomiting, or swelling of the face, lips or throat with difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is not enough safety information for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use it only after advice from a doctor, and make sure you drink enough fluids if you have diarrhoea.
Precautions and Warnings
Oral rehydration solution is the most important treatment for diarrhoea. See a doctor if diarrhoea lasts more than 2 days, contains blood, comes with high fever, or affects a child, an older person or someone with a long-term illness, as antibiotics or other treatment may be needed. Wash hands well and drink safe water to prevent spread.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause constipation, stomach pain and bloating. Seek medical help if symptoms are severe or a large amount has been swallowed, especially by a child.
Therapeutic Class
