Indications
Qurs Sailan is a Unani herbal tablet. “Sailan” (sailan ur rahem) is the Unani term for leucorrhoea, a white or yellowish vaginal discharge. The tablets are traditionally used by women for excessive non infective white discharge and the weakness, backache and tiredness that may come with it. They contain astringent and tonic plant ingredients. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and they do not treat vaginal infections.
How It Works
Unani practitioners regard the ingredients as astringent (tightening) and strengthening for the womb and reproductive tract. Some plants used in such tablets contain tannins, which have a mild astringent effect. How the combination works in the body has not been properly studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Swallow the tablets with water. Do not take more than the recommended amount. If the discharge does not improve within two to three weeks, see a doctor.
Interactions
No specific interactions are well documented, but herbal tablets may contain several active ingredients. Take advice if you use medicines for diabetes, blood pressure or blood thinning, such as Warfarin. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any of the ingredients listed on the pack
- Pregnancy, unless a practitioner advises it
- Children
Side Effects
Side effects are not well recorded. Some women may have constipation, stomach discomfort, nausea or allergic skin reactions.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, heavy vaginal bleeding, severe lower stomach pain, or discharge together with fever.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Some discharge is normal in pregnancy, but any change needs a doctor’s check. The safety of these tablets in pregnancy has not been established, so do not use them unless a qualified practitioner advises it. Ask a doctor before use while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Some clear or white discharge is normal and changes during the monthly cycle. See a doctor if the discharge is yellow, green or grey, smells bad, is thick like curd, is blood stained, or comes with itching, burning, pain on passing urine, pelvic pain or fever, as these suggest an infection that needs specific treatment. Discharge after the menopause always needs checking. Some traditional tablets contain mineral based ingredients; use only registered products from a reliable source.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset or constipation. If someone has taken much more than the recommended amount, or a child has swallowed the tablets, contact a doctor or go to the nearest hospital and take the pack with you.
