Indications
Raubasine (also called Ajmalicine) is a natural substance from plants such as Rauwolfia. In Bangladesh it is available in combination with Almitrine. The combination is used in older adults for symptoms linked to reduced blood flow to the brain, such as poor memory, poor concentration and dizziness, during recovery after a stroke, and for some inner ear and retinal circulation problems. Evidence of benefit is modest.
How It Works
Raubasine relaxes the muscle in the walls of small blood vessels by blocking alpha-1 receptors, which widens the vessels and may improve blood flow to the brain. Almitrine, its partner in the combination, increases the oxygen content of the blood. Together they aim to deliver more oxygen to brain tissue.
Dosage and Administration
Take as prescribed. The usual adult dose of the combination tablet is 1 tablet twice daily, morning and evening, after meals. Treatment should be reviewed regularly by the doctor.
Interactions
Raubasine can add to the effect of medicines that lower blood pressure, such as Amlodipine, Prazosin or diuretics, and may cause dizziness on standing. Use with care with MAO inhibitors. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.
Contraindications
Do not take if you are allergic to Raubasine or Almitrine, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have severe liver disease, or if you have nerve damage in the hands or feet (because of the Almitrine in the combination).
Side Effects
- Nausea, stomach discomfort
- Dizziness, especially when standing up quickly
- Palpitations, sleep problems
- With long-term use of the combination: weight loss and tingling or numbness in the legs
Get urgent medical help if you faint, notice tingling, numbness or weakness in the legs, or have signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Stand up slowly to avoid dizziness. Use with care if you have low blood pressure or liver disease. Because of the risks linked to Almitrine, some countries have withdrawn the combination; it should be used only under a doctor’s supervision, for the shortest time needed, with regular weight checks.
Overdose
Overdose may cause low blood pressure, fainting, fast heartbeat and fast breathing. Seek emergency medical help.
Therapeutic Class
