Indications

Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) is a herbal supplement. Extracts of its flowering tops are traditionally used to ease menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats, and are sometimes taken to support bone and heart health after menopause. Scientific evidence is limited and results are mixed; it is not a cure for any disease.

How It Works

Red Clover contains isoflavones (such as biochanin A, formononetin, genistein and daidzein). These are plant compounds called phytoestrogens, which can act weakly like the female hormone oestrogen in some tissues. This mild oestrogen-like effect is thought to be behind its traditional use around menopause.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner, usually once or twice a day with water. Do not take more than the recommended amount. Effects, if any, may take several weeks to appear. Long-term use beyond a few months should be discussed with a doctor.

Interactions

  • Blood thinners such as Warfarin, Aspirin or Clopidogrel: may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Hormone medicines (birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy) and Tamoxifen or other hormone-blocking cancer treatments: it may interfere with how they work.
  • Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products being used.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast, uterine or ovarian cancer, endometriosis or uterine fibroids.
  • Bleeding disorders, or within two weeks before surgery.
  • Allergy to Red Clover or other plants of the pea family.
  • Children.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated at label doses. Possible effects include headache, nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, muscle aches, rash and changes in menstrual bleeding or spotting.

Get urgent medical help if there is unusual bleeding or bruising, a severe rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing, or signs of a blood clot such as a painful swollen leg, chest pain or sudden breathlessness.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, because its oestrogen-like effects may affect the baby.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Talk to a doctor before use if there is any history of cancer, blood clots, liver disease or bleeding problems.
  • Stop at least two weeks before planned surgery.
  • Herbal products vary in strength; choose a product with clear labelling.
  • See a doctor about any unexpected vaginal bleeding after menopause.

Overdose

Information on overdose is limited. Large amounts may cause stomach upset, headache or bleeding problems. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken.
