Indications

Rhubarb root extract is used in mouth preparations, usually an oral paint or gel combined with Salicylic Acid, to soothe and help heal painful conditions inside the mouth. These include mouth ulcers (aphthous ulcers), inflamed or bleeding gums (gingivitis), sore spots caused by dentures or braces, and minor irritation after dental work.

How It Works

Rhubarb root contains natural substances called anthraquinones and tannins. Tannins are astringent, which means they tighten and dry the surface of irritated tissue and help form a protective layer over a sore. When combined with Salicylic Acid, which has mild pain relieving, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects, the preparation helps reduce soreness and keeps the area clean while it heals. Scientific evidence for rhubarb itself is limited, and its use is largely traditional.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label or by your dentist or doctor. Mouth paints are usually applied with the brush or applicator provided directly onto the sore area 3 to 4 times a day, after meals and at bedtime.

  • Dry the area gently before applying, if possible.
  • Avoid eating or drinking for about 30 minutes after applying.
  • Do not swallow large amounts; it is meant for use on the lining of the mouth.

Interactions

When used in the mouth in small amounts, interactions are unlikely. Because the product often contains Salicylic Acid, people taking Warfarin or other blood thinners, or high doses of Aspirin, should ask a doctor or pharmacist before regular or prolonged use.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to rhubarb, Salicylic Acid, Aspirin or other salicylates, or to any ingredient of the product.
  • Children under 12 years unless a doctor advises it, because of the salicylate content.

Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild and include a brief stinging or burning feeling when applied, a bitter taste and temporary brown or yellow staining of the teeth or mouth lining. Allergic reactions are rare.

Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread rash after use.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Small amounts applied in the mouth are not expected to cause harm, but safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well studied. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use, especially in the last three months of pregnancy, because of the salicylate content.

Precautions and Warnings

  • See a dentist or doctor if a mouth ulcer does not heal within 2 weeks, keeps coming back, or is painless and hard, as this needs checking.
  • Do not use more often than directed.
  • Keep away from the eyes.

Overdose

Swallowing a large amount, especially by a child, may cause stomach upset and, because of the Salicylic Acid, salicylate poisoning with symptoms such as ringing in the ears, vomiting and fast breathing. Seek medical help straight away.

Therapeutic Class

Oral (mouth) preparation: herbal astringent, usually combined with a salicylate.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light, with the cap tightly closed and out of the reach of children.
