Indications

Rohitakarista (Rohitakarishta) is a classical Ayurvedic liquid preparation made mainly from the bark of the Rohitaka tree (Tecomella undulata) with other herbs, fermented with jaggery. It is traditionally used for enlargement of the liver and spleen, poor appetite and indigestion, abdominal swelling and piles. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and liver or spleen enlargement always needs a medical diagnosis.

How It Works

Rohitaka bark and the other herbs are traditionally believed to support liver function, improve digestion and reduce swelling. Like other arishtas, it contains a small amount of alcohol produced naturally during fermentation, which preserves the product.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, usually after meals mixed with an equal amount of water. Do not exceed the label amount.

Interactions

  • Because it contains natural alcohol, avoid with Metronidazole, Tinidazole, sedatives and other medicines that react with alcohol.
  • People taking medicines for diabetes should note that it contains sugar from jaggery.
  • Tell your doctor about all herbal products you use, especially if you take medicines for liver disease.

Contraindications

  • People who must avoid alcohol, including those with alcohol related liver disease or alcohol dependence.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Young children, unless advised by a practitioner.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Stomach upset, a burning feeling in the stomach or loose stools may occur.

Get urgent medical help if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, vomiting blood, black stools, severe stomach pain or rapidly increasing swelling of the abdomen, as these may signal serious liver problems.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid during pregnancy because it contains alcohol and safety is not established. Avoid during breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • An enlarged liver or spleen has many causes, some serious; see a doctor for proper tests before using any herbal product.
  • Do not use it in place of treatment prescribed for hepatitis or other liver disease.
  • People with diabetes should consult a doctor because of the sugar content.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause stomach upset and effects of alcohol such as drowsiness. Seek medical advice if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.

Therapeutic Class

Ayurvedic herbal preparation (arishta); traditional liver and digestive tonic.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
