Indications
Rowghan Surkh (meaning “red oil”) is a Unani herbal massage oil for external use. It is traditionally used to ease joint pain and stiffness, muscle aches, back pain, sprains and rheumatic pain. Its red colour comes from the herbs infused in the oil. Scientific evidence for traditional massage oils of this kind is limited, and it does not cure arthritis.
How It Works
In Unani medicine, the warming herbs infused in the oil are believed to improve local blood flow, reduce stiffness and soothe pain. Gentle massage itself also helps relax tight muscles. The exact ingredients vary between makers, so check the label.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. It is usually rubbed gently into the painful area two or three times a day; warming the area afterwards with a cloth may help.
- For external use only. Do not swallow.
- Do not apply to broken skin, wounds or rashes.
- Wash your hands after use and keep it away from the eyes.
Interactions
Interactions with medicines taken by mouth are unlikely. Avoid using other heat-producing rubs or patches on the same area at the same time.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any ingredient of the oil.
- Broken, infected or very sensitive skin.
- Infants and young children, unless a practitioner advises it.
Side Effects
Most people use it without problems. Some may get skin redness, a burning or warm feeling, itching or a rash. The red colour may stain clothes and skin. Stop using it if irritation develops.
Get urgent medical help if a joint is hot, red and very swollen with fever, if you have severe pain after an injury (possible fracture), or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. If the oil is swallowed, especially by a child, seek medical help.
Pregnancy and Lactation
The safety of its herbal ingredients in pregnancy has not been established, so ask a doctor before using it. When breastfeeding, do not apply it to the breast area.
Precautions and Warnings
- Test a small amount on the skin first if you have sensitive skin.
- Joint pain can be caused by gout, infection or rheumatoid arthritis. See a doctor if pain is severe, lasts more than a week, or a joint is swollen.
- Do not cover with a tight bandage or use a heating pad right after applying, as this can increase skin irritation.
Overdose
Using too much on the skin may increase irritation; wash it off with soap and water. If it is swallowed, contact a doctor or poison centre.
