Indications

Salep (Salab misri) is a flour made from the dried tubers (roots) of certain wild orchids. In Unani medicine it is a common ingredient of tonic preparations and is traditionally used as a nourishing restorative for general weakness, to support strength and vitality in men, and as a soothing food for an irritated stomach or diarrhoea. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it is not a cure for any disease.

How It Works

Salep is rich in a natural starch-like substance called glucomannan, which absorbs water and forms a thick, soft gel. This gel can coat and soothe the lining of the stomach and gut and provides some energy. Its tonic effects are described in traditional texts but have not been well studied.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Salep powder is traditionally stirred into warm milk; tonic preparations are usually taken once or twice daily. Drink enough water when taking it.

Interactions

Because it forms a gel, Salep may slow the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time; take other medicines at least 2 hours apart. It may slightly lower blood sugar, so take care with diabetes medicines. Combination tonics contain other herbs that may interact with medicines.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to Salep or other ingredients of the product, or if you have difficulty swallowing or a blockage of the gut.

Side Effects

  • Bloating or wind
  • Constipation if taken without enough fluid
  • Rarely, allergic reactions

Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain or choking after swallowing, severe tummy pain or swelling with no bowel movement, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Small food amounts are probably safe, but there is little information about tonic preparations in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask a doctor before use.

Precautions and Warnings

Wild orchids are protected in many places and Salep is sometimes adulterated, so buy from a reliable source. People with diabetes should check tonic labels for sugar. Do not give to young children without advice. Do not use a tonic instead of treatment for a diagnosed condition.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause bloating, stomach pain or constipation. Drink fluids and seek medical advice if symptoms are severe.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal preparation; nutritive tonic and demulcent (soothing agent).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed to protect from moisture.
