Indications
Sand lizard, known in Unani medicine as saqanqur (the sandfish skink, Scincus scincus, a small desert lizard), is an animal-derived ingredient. The dried body or parts of it are traditionally used in Unani preparations as a sexual tonic for men, for weakness of erection, low sexual desire and general debility. There is little scientific evidence that it works for these purposes, and it should not be relied on to treat erectile problems.
How It Works
In Unani theory, saqanqur is described as hot and moist in temperament and is believed to strengthen the nerves and reproductive organs. How it might act in the body is not known, and no active compounds have been clearly identified.
Dosage and Administration
It is used only as part of combined Unani products. Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner, and do not exceed the stated amount.
Interactions
Interactions have not been studied. Products sold as sexual tonics are sometimes found to contain hidden prescription drugs such as Sildenafil or Tadalafil, which can dangerously lower blood pressure when combined with nitrates such as Glyceryl Trinitrate or Isosorbide Mononitrate. Tell your doctor about all medicines and herbal products you use, especially heart medicines.
Contraindications
- Heart disease, chest pain (angina), recent heart attack or stroke, or use of nitrate medicines.
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure.
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and children.
- Allergy to any ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Side effects are not well documented. Products of this type may cause a feeling of heat, flushing, restlessness, stomach upset or allergic reactions.
Get urgent medical help if you develop chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe headache, an erection lasting more than 4 hours, or swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
This ingredient is used in products intended for men. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
Erection problems can be an early sign of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or hormone problems, so it is wise to see a doctor rather than relying on tonics. Buy only registered products from a trusted pharmacy.
Overdose
Effects of overdose are not known. If a large amount is taken or you feel unwell, seek medical advice and take the pack with you.
