Indications

Sanjivani Rasayan is an Ayurvedic rasayana, meaning a rejuvenating tonic. It is traditionally used to restore strength and energy in general weakness and tiredness, during recovery from illness, and to support appetite and overall vitality. The exact herbs it contains vary between makers, so read the label carefully. Scientific evidence for such tonics is limited, and it is not a treatment for any specific disease.

How It Works

In Ayurveda, rasayana preparations are believed to nourish the body tissues, improve digestion and build resistance to illness. Their effects come from the combined herbs and are not well studied in modern research.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner, usually after meals. Do not take more than advised, and do not combine it with other Ayurvedic tonics unless a practitioner advises it.

Interactions

Because the ingredients vary, interactions are not fully known. Herbal tonics may affect blood sugar, blood pressure and blood clotting. Tell your doctor about this product if you take medicines for diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or blood thinners such as Warfarin.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless a doctor advises it.
  • Young children, unless a practitioner advises it.
  • Known allergy to any ingredient listed on the label.

Side Effects

Most people tolerate it well. Possible effects include stomach upset, heartburn, loose stools or a feeling of heat in the body. Some tonics contain sugar or honey, which can raise blood sugar.

Get urgent medical help if you have yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain, vomiting that does not stop, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it, because the safety of its herbal ingredients in these situations has not been established.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Long-lasting tiredness or weakness can be caused by anaemia, thyroid problems, diabetes, infection or depression. See a doctor if it does not improve.
  • People with diabetes should check the sugar content on the label.
  • Buy only from reliable makers; some traditional preparations have been found to contain heavy metals.

Overdose

Taking too much may cause stomach upset or other unwanted effects depending on the ingredients. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
