Indications
Saribadyarista (also spelled Sarivadyasava) is a classical Ayurvedic liquid preparation made by natural fermentation of herbs, with Indian sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus, known as Anantamul) as its main ingredient. It is traditionally used as a “blood purifier” for skin problems such as boils, itching, eczema-like rashes and acne, and in traditional practice for some urinary complaints and joint discomfort. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and it should not replace proper medical treatment.
How It Works
The herbs in this preparation are believed in Ayurveda to cleanse the blood and cool the body. Some of its plant ingredients have shown mild anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects in laboratory studies, but how the finished product works in people has not been well studied.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic practitioner. It is usually taken after meals, mixed with an equal amount of water. Shake the bottle well before use. Do not take more than the recommended amount.
Interactions
Fermented Ayurvedic liquids contain a small amount of naturally formed alcohol, so avoid using them with Metronidazole, Tinidazole, Disulfiram or sedative medicines. If you take regular medicines for diabetes, blood pressure, blood thinning or any long-term condition, check with a doctor or pharmacist before use.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to any of its herbal ingredients.
- People who must avoid alcohol completely, including those recovering from alcohol dependence or with liver disease, should not use it without medical advice.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Some people may notice stomach upset, nausea, loose stools or a burning feeling in the stomach. Allergic skin reactions are possible.
Get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, a widespread rash, or severe stomach pain.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established, and the product contains a little alcohol. Do not use it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless a doctor advises it.
Precautions and Warnings
- Skin conditions that are spreading, painful, or come with fever need a doctor’s check.
- People with diabetes should note that many Ayurvedic liquids contain sugar or jaggery.
- Keep away from children unless a practitioner has advised a child’s dose.
- Stop use and seek advice if your symptoms get worse.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause stomach upset and, because of the alcohol content, drowsiness. If a large amount has been swallowed, especially by a child, seek medical help.
