Indications

Sesame oil is a natural vegetable oil pressed from sesame seeds. In medicines it is mainly used as the oily base of ointments, especially traditional moist burn and wound ointments, where it is combined with Beeswax and plant extracts. Such ointments are used to soothe and protect minor burns, scalds, abrasions and superficial wounds and to keep the wound moist while it heals. Sesame oil is also used as a carrier oil in some injections and skin products.

How It Works

Sesame oil forms a soft, oily layer over the skin that reduces water loss and keeps the wound surface moist, which supports natural healing and helps prevent dressings from sticking. It softens the skin and contains natural antioxidants. It is not an antibiotic and does not treat infection.

Dosage and Administration

Use the ointment as directed on the label or by your doctor. Usually the burn or wound is gently cleaned, then a thin, even layer of ointment is spread over it and renewed several times a day, before the previous layer dries out. Gently wipe away old ointment and loose material before reapplying. Cool a fresh burn under clean running water for several minutes before applying any ointment.

Interactions

No significant interactions with medicines taken by mouth are known. Avoid applying other creams or ointments to the same area at the same time unless a doctor advises it.

Contraindications

  • Known allergy to sesame or any ingredient of the product.
  • Deep, large or infected burns, which need medical treatment rather than home care.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Some people may notice mild stinging when first applied, or an allergic skin rash, especially if they are allergic to sesame.

Get urgent medical help for signs of allergy such as hives, swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing. Also seek care for burns that are large, deep, on the face, hands, feet, genitals or joints, for electrical or chemical burns, and for wounds showing spreading redness, pus, increasing pain or fever.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Sesame oil used on the skin is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If treating a burn on the breast, clean the area before feeding the baby.

Precautions and Warnings

For external use only. Do not use on large areas of broken skin without medical advice. People with sesame allergy should avoid it. Keep wounds clean and see a doctor if healing is slow.

Overdose

Overdose is not expected with use on the skin. Swallowing a small amount of ointment is usually harmless but may cause stomach upset; contact a doctor if a child swallows a large amount.

Therapeutic Class
