Indications

Sesame Seed Oil is used in nasal sprays and drops to moisten and soothe a dry, crusted or irritated nose. It may help with dryness caused by dry air, air conditioning, heating, long use of decongestant sprays, oxygen therapy or after nasal surgery, and with nosebleeds related to dryness. Refined sesame oil is also used as a carrier oil in some injections and skin products.

How It Works

The oil forms a thin, protective film over the lining of the nose. This reduces moisture loss, softens crusts and helps the delicate lining heal. Sesame oil also contains natural substances that act as antioxidants. It does not treat infection or allergy.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the label. A common use for adults is 1 to 2 sprays or drops into each nostril 2 to 3 times a day. Blow the nose gently first, keep the head upright, spray while breathing in gently, and wipe the nozzle after use. Do not share the bottle with others. Use in children only as directed on the label or by a doctor.

Interactions

No important interactions are known. If you use other nasal sprays, leave a few minutes between them, as the oil film may reduce how well a water-based spray reaches the lining.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to sesame or sesame oil, which can be serious in people with a sesame food allergy.
  • Allergy to any other ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Occasionally there may be a mild burning or stinging feeling, sneezing, an oily taste in the throat or a feeling of blocked nose.

Stop using and get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing or a widespread rash, as these may be signs of a sesame allergy. See a doctor for nosebleeds that do not stop after 20 minutes of pressure.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Sesame oil nasal products are not absorbed in meaningful amounts and are generally considered suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do not use oily nose drops in infants or in people who may inhale them deeply (for example while lying flat), as oil in the lungs can cause a type of pneumonia.
  • See a doctor if dryness, bleeding or blockage continues for more than 2 weeks, or if there is pain, fever or foul discharge.
  • Keep the nozzle clean to avoid contamination.

Overdose

Using too much is unlikely to be harmful, though it may cause a greasy, blocked feeling. Swallowing a small amount is not dangerous. Seek medical help if a child chokes or coughs persistently after use.

Therapeutic Class

Nasal emollient and moisturiser (vegetable oil).

Storage

Store below 30°C, away from light and heat, with the cap tightly closed, out of the reach of children. Use within the time stated on the pack after opening.
