Indications

Sharbat Banafsha is a Unani syrup made mainly from the flowers of sweet violet (Viola odorata, called Banafsha). It is traditionally used to ease dry cough, sore throat, common cold, catarrh (a blocked or runny nose with mucus), mild fever and chest congestion. It is also traditionally used as a mild laxative. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

Violet flowers contain mucilage (a soft, gel-like plant substance), saponins and other natural compounds. The mucilage is believed to coat and soothe an irritated throat, while saponins may help loosen mucus so it is easier to cough up. In Unani tradition the syrup is considered cooling and calming.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. It is usually taken two or three times a day, on its own or mixed in a little warm water. Children should take a smaller dose as stated on the label or by a practitioner. Shake well before use if the label says so.

Interactions

  • No important drug interactions are well known.
  • The syrup contains sugar; people taking diabetes medicines should check their blood sugar.
  • Tell your doctor about all herbal products you take.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to violet or any ingredient.
  • People with diabetes should avoid sugar-based syrups or use them only on a doctor’s advice.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Large amounts may cause loose stools, nausea or stomach upset. Allergic skin rash is rare.

Get urgent medical help if there is difficulty breathing, wheezing, high fever that does not settle, coughing up blood, or swelling of the face or throat.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The safety of this syrup in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Use only if a doctor advises it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • See a doctor if the cough lasts more than 2 weeks, or if there is fast breathing, chest pain or blood in the sputum.
  • Babies and young children with fever or breathing trouble need a doctor, not only home remedies.
  • The sugar content can harm teeth; rinse the mouth after use.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely to be serious but may cause diarrhoea and stomach upset, and a rise in blood sugar in people with diabetes. Seek medical advice if a large amount is taken or a child seems unwell.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal preparation (cough and cold syrup).

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the bottle tightly closed.
