Indications

Sharbat Misali is a traditional Unani syrup used as an ingredient in herbal tonic preparations. Its exact herbal content varies between manufacturers, so check the product label. Tonics containing it are traditionally used to improve appetite and digestion, for general weakness and tiredness, and during recovery after illness. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

In Unani tradition such syrups are described as strengthening the stomach, liver and general vitality. The sugar base provides quick energy. How the herbal ingredients act in the body has not been well studied.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Tonic syrups are usually taken once or twice a day after meals, sometimes diluted in water.

Interactions

No well-documented interactions are known. Because it contains sugar, it may affect blood sugar control in people taking medicines for diabetes. Tell your doctor about any herbal tonics you take, especially if you take blood thinners such as Warfarin.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • People with diabetes should avoid sugar-based syrups unless a doctor agrees.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, nausea and, rarely, allergic skin rash. Regular use adds sugar and calories to the diet.

Get urgent medical help if you have signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat, or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Use only after advice from a doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Ongoing tiredness, poor appetite or weight loss can be signs of illness such as anaemia, diabetes, thyroid disease or infection. See a doctor if they last more than 2 weeks.
  • Herbal tonics are not a replacement for prescribed medicines or a balanced diet.
  • Give to children only on medical advice.

Overdose

Too much may cause stomach upset and a rise in blood sugar. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken, or if a child has swallowed it.
