Generic medicine

Sharbat Niswan

  • 4 brands registered in Bangladesh
  • 3 companies

Indications

Sharbat Niswan is a traditional Unani syrup made for women’s health (niswan means “of women”). It is a blend of herbs and is traditionally used for:

  • Irregular, scanty or painful periods
  • White vaginal discharge (leucorrhoea) linked to general weakness
  • Weakness and tiredness related to menstrual problems

Scientific evidence for these uses is limited. Abnormal bleeding, heavy or smelly discharge, or severe period pain can have causes that need proper medical tests, so see a doctor rather than relying on this syrup alone.

How It Works

Unani women’s tonics generally combine herbs traditionally regarded as strengthening the womb, regulating the cycle and improving general vitality. The exact ingredients vary between makers, so check the pack for the full list. How the mixture works has not been established scientifically.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Shake the bottle well and measure the dose with the cup or spoon provided. It is usually taken after meals. Not for use in children.

Interactions

Interactions are not well studied. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before use if you take hormonal medicines (such as oral contraceptives or hormone therapy), blood thinners such as Warfarin, or medicines for diabetes. Tell your doctor about all herbal products you use.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy, or if pregnancy is possible (some herbs used for periods can stimulate the womb)
  • Known allergy to any ingredient
  • Unexplained vaginal bleeding, until assessed by a doctor

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon but may include:

  • Nausea, stomach upset or loose stools
  • Allergic rash or itching
  • Rise in blood sugar because of the sugar content

Get urgent medical help if you have very heavy bleeding, severe lower abdominal pain, fainting, fever with foul-smelling discharge, or signs of allergy such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy. If your period is late, take a pregnancy test before using any medicine meant to bring on or regulate periods. Ask a doctor before use during breastfeeding, as safety has not been established.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Contains sugar: people with diabetes should check with their doctor.
  • See a doctor if periods stop for 3 months or more, bleeding happens between periods or after sex, or discharge is itchy, coloured or smelly.
  • Stop and see a doctor if there is no improvement after 2 to 3 cycles.
  • Buy from a reliable source.

Overdose

Taking much more than the label dose may cause stomach upset. Seek medical help if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.
