Indications

Sida cordifolia, known as Bala or Country Mallow, is a plant used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. It is traditionally used as a strengthening tonic for general weakness and tiredness, for nerve and muscle pains, joint pain, and for cough and breathing problems. It is often combined with other herbs in tonics. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

The plant contains natural alkaloids including Ephedrine and related substances, which stimulate the nervous system, open the airways and can raise heart rate and blood pressure. It also contains plant compounds with mild anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effects in laboratory studies.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Ayurvedic or Unani practitioner. Do not exceed the stated dose and do not use it for long periods without advice. Avoid taking it late in the evening, as it may disturb sleep.

Interactions

Because of its Ephedrine content, avoid combining it with caffeine, decongestants such as Pseudoephedrine, stimulant weight loss products, MAO inhibitor antidepressants or Linezolid. It may reduce the effect of blood pressure medicines and may affect blood sugar control in diabetes. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

  • High blood pressure, heart disease or irregular heartbeat.
  • Overactive thyroid, glaucoma, enlarged prostate with difficulty passing urine.
  • Anxiety disorders, seizures or a history of stroke.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding and children.

Side Effects

Possible effects include restlessness, nervousness, sleeplessness, headache, fast heartbeat, raised blood pressure, nausea, dry mouth and difficulty passing urine.

Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain, a pounding or irregular heartbeat, severe headache, sudden weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting or a seizure.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Ephedrine-like substances can affect blood flow to the baby and pass into breast milk.

Precautions and Warnings

Use with care in people with diabetes or kidney disease. Ephedrine-containing products are banned in competitive sport, so athletes should avoid it. Stop using it and see a doctor if you notice palpitations or a rise in blood pressure. Buy only registered products.

Overdose

Too much may cause severe agitation, very fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, chest pain, high temperature or seizures. This is an emergency: go to a hospital and bring the pack.
