Indications

Sodium Succinate is used in eye drops, combined with Adenosine, Cytochrome C and Nicotinamide, for early age-related cataract (clouding of the lens of the eye). The aim is to slow the cataract from getting worse. Evidence that these drops slow cataract is limited, and they do not remove an existing cataract; surgery is the only proven treatment for a cataract that affects vision.

How It Works

Succinate is a natural substance that cells use in the chain of reactions that produces energy. In the eye drop combination, Sodium Succinate is thought to help the cells of the lens make energy and resist oxidative damage, which is linked with cataract formation.

Dosage and Administration

For use in the eye only. Use as prescribed by your eye doctor; the usual dose is 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye 2 to 3 times a day. Treatment is often continued for a long time.

  • Wash your hands, tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid and put the drop inside.
  • Close the eye gently for a minute and press on the inner corner of the eye.
  • Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye or any surface.
  • Leave at least 5 minutes between different eye drops.

Interactions

No important interactions are known with eye use. If you use other eye drops or ointments, leave a gap of at least 5 minutes between them. Tell your doctor about all medicines you use.

Contraindications

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Brief stinging, burning, redness or blurred vision after putting in the drops may occur.

Stop using and see a doctor urgently if you have eye pain, a sudden drop in vision, marked redness or swelling of the eye or eyelids, or signs of an allergic reaction such as rash or swelling of the face.

Pregnancy and Lactation

There is little information on use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use only if your doctor advises.
