Indications
Sodium Sulfachloropyridazine is a sulfonamide antibacterial used in veterinary medicine, mainly for poultry and also for calves and pigs. It is given in drinking water, often combined with Trimethoprim, to treat infections caused by sensitive bacteria such as colibacillosis (E. coli infection), fowl cholera, infectious coryza, salmonellosis and some respiratory and gut infections, and it also has activity against coccidiosis. It is not for human use.
How It Works
Sulfachloropyridazine blocks the bacteria from making folic acid, which they need to grow and multiply. This stops the bacteria from spreading so the animal’s immune system can clear the infection. When combined with Trimethoprim, which blocks a later step in the same pathway, the effect is stronger and can kill the bacteria.
Dosage and Administration
Use only as directed on the product label or by a veterinarian, usually dissolved in drinking water for 3 to 5 days. Prepare fresh medicated water every day and make sure it is the only water source during treatment. Observe the withdrawal period on the label before birds or animals are slaughtered for meat. Do not use in laying hens producing eggs for human consumption unless the label allows it.
Interactions
- Do not combine with other sulfonamide products, which increases the risk of toxicity.
- Some local anaesthetics of the ester type, such as Procaine, may reduce its effect.
- Acidifying agents in water may reduce solubility; follow label guidance.
Contraindications
- Animals with known sensitivity to sulfonamides.
- Animals with severe kidney or liver damage, or blood disorders.
- Laying birds producing eggs for human consumption (unless the label states otherwise).
- Not for use in humans.
Side Effects
At recommended doses it is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include reduced water or feed intake and, with overdosing or long courses, kidney damage from crystals in the urine, blood disorders, reduced egg production and poor growth.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if birds or animals stop drinking, show blood in droppings, weakness, or unusual deaths. If a person swallows the product or develops a skin rash after handling it, seek medical help.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Use in breeding or pregnant animals only on a veterinarian’s advice. People who are allergic to sulfa medicines, pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid direct contact with the powder and wear gloves.
Precautions and Warnings
- Make sure animals have plenty of drinking water to protect the kidneys.
- Complete the treatment course and avoid unnecessary use to limit antibiotic resistance.
- Wear gloves and a mask when mixing; wash hands afterwards.
- Respect withdrawal periods so residues do not enter human food.
Overdose
Overdose may cause kidney damage, bleeding, depression and deaths in birds. Stop treatment, provide clean water, and call a veterinarian. If a person swallows the product, seek medical help.
Therapeutic Class
Veterinary sulfonamide antibacterial (often combined with Trimethoprim).
