Indications
Spinosad is a topical (applied to the skin or scalp) medicine used to treat scabies, an itchy skin infestation caused by tiny mites that burrow under the skin, and head lice. It is available as a suspension (a liquid that must be shaken) for external use only.
How It Works
Spinosad comes from natural substances made by a soil bacterium. It acts on the nervous system of mites and lice, causing over-excitement of their nerves, then paralysis and death. It also kills lice eggs, so for head lice one treatment is often enough. Very little is absorbed through human skin.
Dosage and Administration
Use exactly as directed on the label or by your doctor. Shake the bottle well. For head lice, it is usually applied to dry scalp and hair until fully covered, left for about 10 minutes, then rinsed off with warm water; a second treatment after 7 days is needed only if live lice are seen. For scabies, it is usually applied to clean, dry skin over the whole body from the neck down, including between fingers and toes and under nails, left on for the time stated on the pack, then washed off. Close contacts and family members may need treatment at the same time. Wash bedding, towels and clothes in hot water.
Interactions
No important interactions with other medicines are known. Avoid using other skin or scalp treatments on the same area at the same time unless your doctor advises it.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Spinosad or any ingredient of the product.
- Some products contain benzyl alcohol and must not be used in babies under 6 months; check the label for the youngest age allowed.
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include redness or irritation of the skin or scalp, itching, a burning feeling and dry skin. Itching from scabies can continue for 2 to 4 weeks after successful treatment; this does not always mean the treatment failed. Eye irritation can occur if it gets into the eyes.
Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, widespread rash or severe skin reaction.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Very little is absorbed through the skin, but use during pregnancy only if a doctor advises it. Breastfeeding mothers may wish to pump and discard milk for a short time after use, as some products contain benzyl alcohol; ask your doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
- For external use only. Do not swallow.
- Keep away from the eyes; if contact happens, rinse well with water.
- Children should be treated under adult supervision.
- Do not use on broken or infected skin unless advised.
Overdose
Using more than directed on the skin is unlikely to cause serious harm. If swallowed, especially by a child, contact a doctor or poison centre.
