Indications
Sulphadimethoxine sodium is a veterinary medicine used in animals, especially poultry, and is not for human use. Often combined with Diaverdin or Trimethoprim, it is used to prevent and treat coccidiosis and bacterial infections such as fowl cholera, infectious coryza, and some respiratory and gut infections in poultry and livestock.
How It Works
It is a long-acting sulphonamide. It blocks the use of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which bacteria and coccidia need to make folic acid. Without folic acid they cannot multiply, and the animal’s immune system clears the infection. Adding a diaminopyrimidine partner strengthens this effect.
Dosage and Administration
Given in drinking water, feed or as directed by a veterinarian, for the number of days shown on the label. Mix fresh each day, give it as the only source of drinking water during treatment, and finish the full course.
Interactions
- PABA-containing products and some local anaesthetics like Procaine can reduce its effect.
- Avoid giving with other sulphonamides.
- Do not mix with other water medicines unless a veterinarian advises compatibility.
Contraindications
- Not for human use.
- Animals with known sulphonamide sensitivity or severe kidney or liver disease.
- Laying birds producing eggs for human consumption, unless the label allows it.
Side Effects
At correct doses it is usually well tolerated. Prolonged use or overdose may cause kidney crystals and damage, reduced growth, lower egg production, and blood or bleeding problems.
Contact a veterinarian promptly if birds or animals stop drinking, become weak, or deaths rise during treatment. If a person swallows the product or has a skin rash or breathing trouble after handling it, seek medical help.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Pregnant or breastfeeding people should avoid handling the powder or use gloves and a mask. Use in breeding or lactating animals only on veterinary advice.
Precautions and Warnings
- Follow the withdrawal period on the label before treated animals or their products are used for food.
- Provide plenty of clean water to reduce the risk of kidney damage.
- People allergic to sulpha drugs should avoid contact.
- Use responsibly to limit antimicrobial resistance.
Overdose
Overdose may cause kidney damage, poor growth and bleeding. Stop treatment and contact a veterinarian.
Therapeutic Class
