Indications
Tedizolid phosphate is an antibiotic used to treat acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, such as cellulitis, wound infections and major skin abscesses, caused by susceptible bacteria including MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
How It Works
Tedizolid is an oxazolidinone antibiotic. Tedizolid phosphate is changed in the body into active Tedizolid, which binds to the bacterial ribosome (the part of the cell that makes proteins) and stops bacteria from making the proteins they need to grow.
Dosage and Administration
The usual adult dose is 200 mg once a day for 6 days, taken by mouth with or without food, or as prescribed. The injection form is given into a vein over 1 hour by a doctor or nurse, and treatment can be switched to tablets when appropriate. Complete the full course even if you feel better.
Interactions
- Tedizolid is a weak monoamine oxidase inhibitor; use with care with antidepressants and other serotonergic medicines (SSRIs, SNRIs, Tramadol, Triptans) and with Pseudoephedrine or other decongestants.
- It may raise levels of Rosuvastatin, Methotrexate and some other medicines carried by the BCRP transporter.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Tedizolid or other oxazolidinones (such as Linezolid).
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, headache, diarrhoea, vomiting, dizziness and itching. Reactions at the infusion site can occur with the injection.
Get urgent medical help if you have severe or bloody diarrhoea (possible bowel infection), signs of a severe allergic reaction, unusual bleeding or bruising, frequent infections, or changes in vision or numbness in the hands and feet.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There is limited information in pregnancy; use only if your doctor decides the benefit outweighs the risk. It is not known whether it passes into breast milk; discuss with your doctor before breastfeeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- Not recommended for people with low white blood cell counts (neutropenia), as it may be less effective.
- Use only for bacterial infections; it does not work for viral infections.
- Tell your doctor if diarrhoea develops during or after treatment.
Overdose
Experience with overdose is limited. Contact a doctor or hospital; treatment is supportive.
