Indications
This product is based on Terminalia fruits, mainly Terminalia chebula (haritaki, known in Unani as halela) and Terminalia bellirica (bahera, known as balela). These dried fruits are used in Unani and Ayurvedic medicine, alone as powders or as key parts of traditional compound preparations together with amla. They are traditionally used to ease constipation and indigestion, support regular bowel habits, and as a general tonic. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited, and they are not a cure for any disease.
How It Works
Terminalia fruits contain tannins, anthraquinone-like compounds and other plant antioxidants. In the gut they have a mild laxative effect while also acting as astringents that tone the bowel lining. They may also have mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani or Ayurvedic practitioner. Powders are often taken at bedtime with warm water or as directed. Use for short periods unless a practitioner advises otherwise, and drink enough water. Do not give to young children unless a practitioner advises it.
Interactions
Because of its laxative and astringent effects, it may reduce the absorption of other medicines; take it at least 2 hours apart from your other medicines. It may lower blood sugar slightly in people on diabetes medicines, and loose stools can increase the risk of low potassium in people taking water tablets or Digoxin. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines and herbal products you use.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy.
- Diarrhoea, dehydration or bowel blockage.
- Known allergy to any ingredient.
- Young children, unless a practitioner advises it.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include loose stools, stomach cramps, gas and, with long-term use, a feeling of weakness from fluid and salt loss.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, severe diarrhoea with signs of dehydration (very dry mouth, little urine, dizziness), blood in the stool, or severe stomach pain.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Do not use during pregnancy, as traditional texts and practitioners advise against laxative herbs at this time. There is not enough safety information for breastfeeding, so use it only after advice from a doctor.
Precautions and Warnings
Constipation that lasts more than two weeks, a sudden change in bowel habit, or constipation with weight loss, blood in the stool or severe pain needs a doctor. Do not rely on laxatives for a long time; eat enough fibre, drink water and stay active. People with diabetes, kidney disease or those on water tablets should talk to a doctor first.
Overdose
Taking too much may cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and dehydration. Drink fluids and seek medical help if symptoms are severe, especially in a child or older person.
