Indications
Terpineol is a natural aromatic substance found in pine oil, tea tree oil and several other plant oils. In medicines it is used mainly as an ingredient in inhalations, chest rubs, nasal and throat products, mouth washes and some skin preparations, where it gives a fresh, pine-like smell and helps the product feel soothing. Such combination products are used for short-term relief of a blocked nose and cold symptoms. It is also widely used as a fragrance in soaps and cosmetics.
How It Works
Terpineol is a plant-derived alcohol from the terpene family. Its vapour produces a cool, fresh sensation in the nose and throat that can make breathing feel easier, although it does not actually shrink swollen nasal tissues. It also has mild antiseptic activity against some germs. In most products it works together with other ingredients rather than on its own.
Dosage and Administration
Terpineol is not taken as a medicine on its own. Use the product that contains it exactly as directed on the label, for example by inhaling the vapour, applying a thin layer to the chest, or using it in the nose or mouth as instructed. Do not swallow products meant for inhalation or external use.
Interactions
No important interactions with other medicines are known at the small amounts used in medicines and cosmetics.
Contraindications
- Allergy or sensitivity to Terpineol, pine oil, tea tree oil or other ingredients of the product
- Products with strong aromatic oils should not be applied to the face or nose of infants and very young children unless the label says it is suitable
Side Effects
It is usually well tolerated. Possible effects include skin or nose irritation, redness, a burning feeling, sneezing or allergic skin reactions in sensitive people. Strong vapours can irritate the eyes or trigger coughing in people with asthma.
Get urgent medical help if a product containing it is swallowed in large amounts, especially by a child, or if there is swelling of the face, difficulty breathing or wheezing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Small amounts in products used as directed are not expected to cause harm, but there is little specific information. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using aromatic inhalation products during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and do not apply to the breast area.
Precautions and Warnings
For external or inhalation use only, as stated on the product. Keep away from the eyes. Use with care in people with asthma or sensitive skin. Do not heat oils in a microwave or use with an open flame.
Overdose
Swallowing a large amount of an aromatic oil product can cause nausea, vomiting, drowsiness or, in children, more serious effects. Do not cause vomiting; contact a doctor or poison service at once.
