Indications

Testosterone Decanoate is a long-acting form of the male hormone testosterone. It is used, usually as part of a mixed testosterone ester injection, for testosterone replacement in men whose bodies make too little testosterone (male hypogonadism). Low testosterone can cause low sex drive, erectile problems, tiredness, low mood, loss of muscle and bone thinning. It must only be used when low testosterone has been confirmed by blood tests.

How It Works

After injection into a muscle, Testosterone Decanoate is released slowly and changed into testosterone. This replaces the missing hormone and restores male characteristics, sex drive, muscle strength, bone density and red blood cell production.

Dosage and Administration

Given as a deep injection into a muscle by a doctor or nurse, as prescribed, usually every few weeks. The dose and interval are adjusted according to symptoms and blood testosterone levels. It is not for self-injection without training and medical supervision.

Interactions

Testosterone can increase the effect of blood thinners such as Warfarin, so blood clotting tests are needed. It can lower blood sugar and the dose of insulin or diabetes tablets may need to be reduced. Using it with corticosteroids such as Prednisolone increases the risk of fluid retention.

Contraindications

Do not use if you have or are suspected of having prostate cancer or male breast cancer, if you are allergic to the injection (some products contain arachis oil from peanuts), or in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Not for use in children unless prescribed by a specialist.

Side Effects

  • Pain or swelling at the injection site
  • Acne, oily skin, increased body hair
  • Increase in red blood cells (thicker blood)
  • Fluid retention, breast swelling or tenderness
  • Mood changes, aggression, changes in sex drive
  • Reduced sperm production and fertility

Get urgent medical help if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, pain or swelling in one leg, sudden weakness or difficulty speaking, a painful erection lasting more than 4 hours, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Must not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it can cause masculinisation of a female baby.

Precautions and Warnings

Regular blood tests are needed to check testosterone, red blood cell count, liver function, cholesterol and, in older men, the prostate (PSA). Use with care in heart, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, epilepsy and migraine. Misuse for bodybuilding is dangerous and can cause heart disease, liver damage, infertility and mental health problems.

Overdose

Overdose is unlikely as it is given by a health professional. Too much testosterone over time can cause thick blood, fluid retention and mood changes; contact your doctor.
