Indications

Thymol is an antiseptic that comes from thyme oil. It is found in mouthwashes, throat lozenges, and some skin and scalp products. It is used to:

  • Help keep the mouth clean, reduce plaque and freshen bad breath.
  • Ease minor mouth and throat irritation.
  • Help treat minor skin infections caused by germs or fungi, as part of combination products.

How It Works

Thymol is a phenol (a type of antiseptic chemical). It damages the outer layer of bacteria and fungi, which stops them growing and helps reduce germs on the surface where it is applied.

Dosage and Administration

Use as directed on the pack, as amounts differ between products.

  • Mouthwash: rinse with the measured amount for about 30 seconds, usually twice a day after brushing, then spit it out. Do not swallow. Dilute first if the pack says so.
  • Lozenges: let one dissolve slowly in the mouth as directed on the pack.
  • Skin products: apply a thin layer to the affected area as directed.

Interactions

No important interactions with other medicines are known when used on the skin or in the mouth.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Thymol, thyme or any ingredient of the product.
  • Mouthwashes are not for children under 6 years, who may swallow them.

Side Effects

Burning or stinging in the mouth, a change in taste, or mild irritation or redness of the skin. These usually settle when the product is stopped.

Get urgent medical help if you have swelling of the face, lips or throat, trouble breathing, or if a child swallows a large amount.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Normal use in the mouth or on the skin is not expected to cause harm. Do not swallow mouthwash. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before using lozenges or skin products regularly while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Keep away from the eyes. If it gets in the eyes, rinse well with water.
  • Do not apply to large broken or burned areas of skin unless the product is made for it.
  • Many mouthwashes contain alcohol; keep away from flames and from children.
  • See a dentist or doctor if mouth or skin symptoms last more than a week.

Overdose

Swallowing a large amount can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and dizziness, and alcohol-containing mouthwash can be dangerous for children. Seek medical help.
