Indications

Trichlorfon is a veterinary antiparasitic product used in animals, not in people. It is used in livestock, poultry and fish to control external parasites such as lice, mites, ticks, flies and fish lice, and some internal worms and bots. It is not for human use.

How It Works

Trichlorfon is an organophosphate. It blocks an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase in the nerves of parasites. Nerve signals then keep firing, which paralyses and kills the parasite.

Dosage and Administration

Use only as directed on the product label or by a veterinarian. The dose and method (spray, pour-on, bath, feed or water medication, or pond treatment) depend on the animal species, body weight and the parasite being treated. Measure carefully and do not exceed the label dose. Wear gloves, a mask and protective clothing when handling, and do not eat, drink or smoke while using it.

Interactions

Do not use at the same time as, or close to, other organophosphates, carbamates or medicines that affect acetylcholinesterase, as poisoning is more likely. Some muscle relaxants used in animal surgery and anaesthesia can have stronger effects. Ask a veterinarian before combining with other treatments.

Contraindications

  • Not for human use.
  • Do not use in sick, weak, very young or stressed animals unless a veterinarian advises.
  • Do not use in species not listed on the label.

Side Effects

In animals, overdose or sensitivity may cause drooling, watery eyes, diarrhoea, muscle twitching, weakness, breathing difficulty and collapse. In fish, it can be toxic to some species and to useful pond organisms.

If a person is accidentally exposed and develops headache, sweating, blurred vision, vomiting, muscle twitching, chest tightness or breathing difficulty, get urgent medical help and show the product label. An animal with these signs needs a veterinarian straight away.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Use in pregnant or milk-producing animals only as stated on the label or advised by a veterinarian. Observe milk and egg withdrawal periods. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid handling the product.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Observe the withdrawal period on the label before meat, milk, eggs or fish from treated animals are used for food.
  • Keep away from waterways except where use in ponds is directed, as it is toxic to aquatic life and bees.
  • Wash skin with soap and water after contact.

Overdose

Overdose causes organophosphate poisoning. Animals need urgent veterinary care; antidotes such as Atropine are given by the vet. People exposed should go to hospital immediately.

Therapeutic Class

Veterinary antiparasitic; organophosphate insecticide and anthelmintic.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light, in the original closed container, away from food and animal feed, and out of the reach of children.
