Indications
This is a toothpaste containing tea tree oil (TTO), described by its maker as a thermal formula. It is used for daily cleaning of the teeth and mouth to help remove plaque, freshen breath and support healthy gums. Tea tree oil is a plant oil traditionally valued for its antimicrobial properties. It is an oral-care product, not a treatment for gum disease or tooth decay on its own.
How It Works
Brushing with toothpaste removes plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that causes gum inflammation, bad breath and decay. The mild abrasives and foaming agents in toothpaste help clean tooth surfaces. Tea tree oil has shown antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies, which may help reduce plaque bacteria, although evidence in everyday use is limited.
Dosage and Administration
Use as directed on the pack. Brush your teeth twice a day, morning and night, for about 2 minutes, using a pea-sized amount on a soft toothbrush. Spit out after brushing and do not swallow. Children should use it only if the label allows their age, with a small smear or pea-sized amount, under adult supervision.
Interactions
No interactions with medicines are known. If you use a prescribed mouthwash or gel, ask your dentist about timing.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to tea tree oil or any ingredient of the toothpaste.
Side Effects
Most people have no problems. Some may notice mild mouth irritation, a burning feeling, a change in taste or, rarely, an allergic reaction to tea tree oil, with soreness, peeling or swelling of the gums or lips.
Get urgent medical help if you notice swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. See a dentist if you have bleeding gums that do not improve, a loose tooth, tooth pain, or a mouth ulcer lasting more than 2 weeks.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Toothpaste used normally and not swallowed is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Good oral care is especially important during pregnancy.
Precautions and Warnings
Do not swallow. Keep away from young children, as swallowed tea tree oil can be harmful. Stop use if irritation develops. Check the label for fluoride content; if it does not contain fluoride, ask your dentist whether you need another source of fluoride to protect against decay. Visit a dentist regularly.
Overdose
Swallowing a small amount during brushing is usually harmless. If a child swallows a large amount, contact a doctor or poison centre, as tea tree oil taken by mouth can cause drowsiness, confusion and unsteadiness.
