Indications

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a yellow root widely used as a spice and in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. Turmeric extract, rich in curcumin, is used in supplements, often with joint-health ingredients. It is used to help ease mild joint pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis, and traditionally for indigestion, inflammation and skin problems. Some studies show modest benefit for joint pain; evidence for other uses is limited.

How It Works

Curcumin, the main active substance, has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects: it blocks several chemical signals in the body that drive inflammation. Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, so many products add black pepper extract (Piperine) or special formulations to improve absorption.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label, usually with food. Using turmeric as a spice in cooking is safe in normal amounts.

Interactions

  • May increase bleeding risk with blood thinners such as Warfarin, Clopidogrel and Aspirin.
  • May lower blood sugar further with diabetes medicines.
  • Products with Piperine can change blood levels of several medicines; ask a pharmacist.
  • May interfere with some cancer medicines; ask your doctor.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to turmeric.
  • Gallstones or bile duct blockage, as turmeric can stimulate gallbladder contraction.
  • Bleeding disorders, unless a doctor agrees.

Side Effects

Usually well tolerated. Possible effects include stomach upset, acidity, nausea and diarrhoea. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with concentrated turmeric supplements.

Get urgent medical help if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain, unusual bleeding or bruising, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Turmeric in food is safe. Concentrated supplements are not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a doctor advises.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Stop at least 2 weeks before planned surgery.
  • People with liver disease, stomach ulcers or iron deficiency should ask a doctor first.
