Indications

Turpentine Oil is used on the skin as a rubbing liniment to ease minor aches and pains of muscles and joints, such as stiffness, sprains, strains, backache, lumbago and rheumatic pain. It is usually combined with other warming or soothing ingredients in a cream, balm or liniment. It is for external use only.

How It Works

Turpentine Oil is a counter-irritant, also called a rubefacient. When rubbed into the skin it causes mild warmth and redness by widening the small blood vessels near the surface. This warming feeling distracts the nerves from the deeper pain and increases local blood flow, which can make the area feel less stiff and sore.

Dosage and Administration

Apply a small amount to the painful area and rub in gently, usually 2 to 3 times a day, or as directed on the label. Wash your hands after use. Do not apply to broken, inflamed or sensitive skin, and do not cover with a tight or heat-retaining bandage. Do not swallow.

Interactions

No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth are expected because only a small amount passes through the skin. Do not use at the same time as other heat rubs, heating pads or hot water bottles on the same area, as this may cause burns or severe irritation.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to Turpentine Oil or any other ingredient of the product.
  • Broken, cut, burned or infected skin, eczema or dermatitis on the area.
  • Use near the eyes, mouth, nose or other mucous membranes.
  • Young children, unless a doctor advises it.

Side Effects

Warmth, redness and a stinging feeling at the site are expected and usually mild. Some people develop skin irritation, itching, rash or allergic contact dermatitis. Swallowing turpentine is poisonous and can cause vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, breathing problems and kidney damage.

Wash the product off and get urgent medical help if you develop blistering, severe burning, swelling of the face or lips, difficulty breathing, or if anyone swallows the product.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Small amounts on limited areas of skin are unlikely to cause harm, but safety in pregnancy has not been well studied. Ask a doctor before use. If breastfeeding, do not apply to the breast area so the baby does not come into contact with it.

Precautions and Warnings

  • For external use only. Keep away from the eyes; if contact occurs, rinse well with water.
  • Do not use on large areas of skin or for long periods.
  • Stop using if irritation becomes severe.
  • Turpentine is flammable: keep away from flames and heat.
  • See a doctor if pain lasts more than 7 days, or if there is swelling, fever or a serious injury.

Overdose

Too much on the skin may cause burning and blistering: wash off with soap and water. Swallowing turpentine is dangerous. Do not make the person vomit, as this can cause the oil to enter the lungs. Seek emergency medical help at once.

Therapeutic Class

Topical counter-irritant (rubefacient) for muscle and joint pain.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light, heat and flames, and out of the reach of children. Keep the container tightly closed.
