Indications

This Unani cold, catarrh and headache tonic is an itrifal, a classical Unani semi-solid preparation based on the three myrobalans (dried fruits of Haritaki, Bahera and Amla) in honey or sugar syrup, combined with other herbs. It is traditionally used for catarrh (a blocked or runny nose with mucus), the head heaviness and headache that come with colds and sinus congestion, and mild constipation. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

Myrobalans have a mild laxative effect and contain tannins and antioxidant plant compounds. In Unani tradition, gently clearing the bowels and the added herbs are believed to reduce excess mucus and ease head congestion. This has not been well studied in people.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. It is usually taken at bedtime with water or warm milk.

Interactions

The mild laxative effect may reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time; keep at least 2 hours between them. Tell your doctor if you take medicines for diabetes, because the product contains sugar or honey, or blood thinners such as Warfarin.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • Diarrhoea, or bowel blockage.
  • Poorly controlled diabetes, unless a doctor agrees.
  • Children, unless a practitioner advises it.

Side Effects

Loose stools, stomach cramps or gas may occur. Allergic reactions are uncommon.

Get urgent medical help for a sudden, severe headache, headache with high fever and stiff neck, swelling or redness around the eyes, confusion, difficulty breathing, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or lips.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid during pregnancy, as laxative herbs are not recommended without medical advice. Safety during breastfeeding has not been established; ask a doctor before use.

Precautions and Warnings

See a doctor if cold or sinus symptoms last more than 10 days, keep coming back, or come with high fever, facial pain or thick coloured discharge, as antibiotics or other treatment may be needed. Do not use it every day for long periods without advice. People with diabetes should note the sugar or honey content.

Overdose

Too much may cause diarrhoea and stomach cramps. Drink fluids and get medical advice if symptoms are severe or if a child swallows a large amount.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal preparation (itrifal) traditionally used for colds, catarrh and headache.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the jar tightly closed and use a clean, dry spoon.
