Indications

This Unani digestive tonic is an itrifal, a classical Unani semi-solid preparation made from the three myrobalans (the dried fruits of Haritaki, Bahera and Amla) in a base of honey or sugar syrup, with coriander (kishniz) added in this type. It is traditionally used for indigestion, gas and bloating, a feeling of heaviness after meals, mild constipation and, in Unani tradition, for heaviness of the head linked to poor digestion. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.

How It Works

Myrobalans have a mild laxative effect and contain tannins and other plant compounds with antioxidant activity. Coriander is traditionally used to relieve gas and support digestion. Together they are thought to ease digestion and help regular bowel movements, though this has not been well studied in people.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. Itrifals are usually taken at bedtime or after meals, with water or warm milk.

Interactions

Because it has a mild laxative effect, it may reduce the absorption of medicines taken at the same time; keep at least 2 hours between them. Tell your doctor if you take medicines for diabetes, as the product contains sugar or honey, or blood thinners such as Warfarin.

Contraindications

  • Allergy to any ingredient.
  • Diarrhoea, or bowel blockage.
  • Poorly controlled diabetes, unless a doctor agrees, because of the sugar or honey content.
  • Children, unless a practitioner advises it.

Side Effects

Loose stools, stomach cramps or gas may occur, especially at higher amounts. Allergic reactions are uncommon.

Get urgent medical help if you have severe abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, black stools, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Avoid during pregnancy, as laxative herbs are not recommended without medical advice. Safety during breastfeeding has not been established; ask a doctor before use.

Precautions and Warnings

Indigestion that keeps coming back, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, or a change in bowel habit in people over 40 needs a doctor’s check. Do not use it every day for long periods without advice. People with diabetes should note the sugar or honey content.

Overdose

Too much may cause diarrhoea and stomach cramps, which can lead to dehydration. Drink fluids and get medical advice if symptoms are severe or if a child swallows a large amount.

Therapeutic Class

Unani herbal preparation (itrifal) traditionally used as a digestive tonic.

Storage

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and out of the reach of children. Keep the jar tightly closed and use a clean, dry spoon.
