Indications
This Unani headache tonic is an itrifal, a classical Unani semi-solid preparation based on the three myrobalans (dried fruits of Haritaki, Bahera and Amla) in honey or sugar syrup, with ustukhuddus (French lavender, Lavandula stoechas) as a key herb in this type. It is traditionally used for headache and heaviness of the head, especially when linked to cold, catarrh or constipation, and as a general brain tonic for poor concentration. Scientific evidence for these uses is limited.
How It Works
Myrobalans have a mild laxative effect, which Unani medicine links to relief of head heaviness. Lavender contains aromatic oils that are thought to have calming and mild pain-easing effects. How the whole preparation works has not been clearly established in people.
Dosage and Administration
Take as directed on the label or by a registered Unani practitioner. It is usually taken at bedtime with water or warm milk.
Interactions
Lavender may add to the effect of sleeping tablets and sedatives such as Diazepam, so take care. The mild laxative effect may reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time; keep at least 2 hours between them. Tell your doctor if you take medicines for diabetes, because the product contains sugar or honey.
Contraindications
- Allergy to lavender or any other ingredient.
- Diarrhoea, or bowel blockage.
- Poorly controlled diabetes, unless a doctor agrees.
- Children, unless a practitioner advises it.
Side Effects
Loose stools, stomach cramps or drowsiness may occur. Allergic reactions are uncommon.
Get urgent medical help for a sudden, severe headache (the worst you have ever had), headache with fever and stiff neck, confusion, weakness or numbness of the face or limbs, problems with speech or vision, fainting, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as safety has not been established. Ask a doctor about headache treatment in pregnancy.
Precautions and Warnings
Frequent or worsening headaches, headaches that wake you from sleep, or headaches with vomiting or changes in vision need a doctor’s assessment. Check your blood pressure, as high blood pressure can cause headache. Do not drive if you feel drowsy. People with diabetes should note the sugar or honey content.
Overdose
Too much may cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and drowsiness. Get medical advice if symptoms are severe or if a child swallows a large amount.
