Indications

Urea 25% cream or lotion is used to soften and moisturise very dry, rough, thickened or cracked skin, especially on the heels, feet, elbows and knees. It helps in conditions such as xerosis (severe dry skin), cracked heels, calluses, keratosis pilaris, ichthyosis and dry, scaly eczema or psoriasis plaques.

How It Works

Urea is a natural moisturising factor found in healthy skin. It attracts and holds water in the outer skin layer (humectant). At higher strengths such as 25%, it also has a keratolytic effect: it gently loosens and softens the thick, hard layer of dead skin cells so it can shed, leaving skin smoother and more flexible.

Dosage and Administration

Apply a thin layer to clean, dry affected skin once or twice a day, or as directed on the label, and rub in gently. For cracked heels, applying at night and wearing cotton socks can help. Wash your hands after use unless treating the hands. Use for as long as needed; once the skin improves, a lower-strength moisturiser may be used to maintain results.

Interactions

Urea can increase the absorption through the skin of other topical medicines, such as Corticosteroid creams, applied to the same area. Avoid using other irritating skin products on the same area at the same time unless advised.

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to urea or any ingredient. Do not apply to broken, raw, bleeding or infected skin, open wounds, or acutely inflamed skin.

Side Effects

The most common effects are temporary stinging, burning, itching or redness, especially on cracked or sensitive skin. Skin irritation or allergic rash can occur occasionally.

Stop using it and get medical help promptly if you develop severe burning, blistering, swelling, a spreading rash or signs of infection, or signs of a severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Urea is a normal substance in the body, and very little is absorbed through the skin, so normal use is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not apply to the breast area just before feeding.

Precautions and Warnings

For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, lips, inside of the nose and other mucous membranes; if it gets in the eyes, rinse well with water. Use carefully on the face and in skin folds. People with diabetes who have foot ulcers or poor circulation should ask a doctor before using it on the feet. Not usually recommended for infants without medical advice.

Overdose

Using too much on the skin may cause irritation. If swallowed in large amounts, it may cause stomach upset; seek medical advice.
