Indications

Uva Ursi (bearberry, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a herb whose leaves are traditionally used to support the urinary tract and to ease symptoms of mild, uncomplicated bladder irritation or lower urinary tract infection. It is often combined with other herbs in kidney and urinary support products. Scientific evidence is limited, and it is not a replacement for antibiotics when a proper urinary infection needs treatment.

How It Works

Bearberry leaves contain arbutin. In the body, arbutin is changed into hydroquinone, which is passed out in the urine and has a mild antiseptic (germ-reducing) effect in the bladder, especially when the urine is alkaline (less acidic). The leaves also contain tannins, which have an astringent (tightening) effect.

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Because of its hydroquinone content, Uva Ursi should only be used for short periods: usually no longer than one week at a time, and not more than about five times in a year. Drink plenty of water while taking it.

Interactions

  • Medicines or foods that make the urine more acidic (such as vitamin C in high doses or cranberry juice) may reduce its effect.
  • Tannins in the leaves may reduce the absorption of iron supplements; take them a few hours apart.
  • Tell your doctor if you take Lithium or diuretics (water tablets), as herbs with a water-passing effect may affect them.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Children under 12 years.
  • Kidney disease or liver disease.
  • Known allergy to Uva Ursi or any other ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

It may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach upset and a greenish-brown colour of the urine (harmless). Long-term or high-dose use may harm the liver and has been linked to eye problems, which is why use should be short.

Get urgent medical help if you have fever, chills, pain in the back or side, blood in the urine, vomiting that does not stop, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy, as it may stimulate the womb, or during breastfeeding, because its safety has not been shown.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Urinary infections can spread to the kidneys. See a doctor if symptoms do not improve within two to three days, if they are severe, or if you are a man, pregnant, elderly or diabetic.
  • Do not use for longer than the label advises.
  • It can irritate the stomach; taking it with food may help.

Overdose

Large amounts of hydroquinone can cause ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, breathlessness, convulsions and collapse. Seek medical help immediately if a large amount has been taken.

Therapeutic Class
