Indications

Vasaka (Adhatoda vasica, known in Bangladesh as basak) is a medicinal shrub whose leaves are widely used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. It is traditionally used for cough, especially cough with thick mucus, bronchitis, colds and asthma-like breathing problems. It is a common ingredient in herbal cough syrups. Vasicine, a compound from the plant, was the starting point for the modern mucus-thinning medicine Bromhexine, but evidence for the herb itself is limited.

How It Works

Vasaka leaves contain alkaloids such as vasicine and vasicinone. These are thought to thin and loosen mucus so it can be coughed up more easily (an expectorant effect) and to relax the airways slightly (a mild bronchodilator effect).

Dosage and Administration

Take as directed on the label or by a registered practitioner. Cough syrups containing vasaka are usually taken two or three times a day. Drink plenty of warm fluids.

Interactions

  • No serious interactions are well known. Avoid taking it at the same time as other cough syrups unless a doctor advises it.
  • Many herbal syrups contain sugar; people taking diabetes medicines should take this into account.

Contraindications

  • Pregnancy, because vasicine can stimulate the womb.
  • Known allergy to vasaka or any other ingredient of the product.

Side Effects

It is usually well tolerated. Some people may get nausea, vomiting, stomach upset or diarrhoea, especially at higher doses.

Get urgent medical help if you have difficulty breathing, wheezing that gets worse, chest pain, coughing up blood, high fever, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Do not use during pregnancy, as vasicine can cause contractions of the womb. Ask a doctor before using it while breastfeeding, because its safety is not established.

Precautions and Warnings

  • See a doctor if a cough lasts more than three weeks, if you cough up blood, lose weight or have night sweats, as these may be signs of tuberculosis or another serious illness.
  • Asthma attacks need proper medical treatment; do not rely on a herbal syrup alone.
  • Use in children only as directed on the label or by a doctor.

Overdose

Large amounts may cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Contact a doctor if a large amount has been taken, especially by a child.

Therapeutic Class

Ayurvedic / Unani herbal preparation (expectorant cough remedy).
