Indications
White Soft Paraffin (white petroleum jelly) is a moisturiser and skin protectant. It is used for dry, rough or scaly skin, eczema and dermatitis, psoriasis, chapped lips and cracked heels, and to protect the nappy area and skin around wounds. It is often combined with Liquid Paraffin in emollient creams and ointments.
How It Works
It forms a thin, greasy layer on the skin that stops water from escaping. This keeps the skin moist, softens dry patches and protects the skin from irritants.
Dosage and Administration
Apply a thin layer to the affected skin as often as needed, usually 2 to 4 times a day and especially after a bath or shower while the skin is still slightly damp. Smooth it gently in the direction of hair growth rather than rubbing hard. Suitable for adults and children. For external use only.
Interactions
No important interactions with medicines taken by mouth. If you also use a medicated cream (such as a steroid cream), apply it first and wait about 30 minutes before applying the emollient, or as your doctor advises.
Contraindications
Allergy to white soft paraffin or any other ingredient of the product.
Side Effects
Usually very well tolerated. Rarely it can cause irritation, blocked pores, small spots around hair roots (folliculitis) or an allergic skin reaction.
Get urgent medical help if you notice signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat or difficulty breathing. See a doctor if the skin becomes red, hot, painful, oozing or crusted, as these may be signs of infection.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If used on the breasts, wipe it off before feeding.
Precautions and Warnings
- Fire risk: clothing, bedding and dressings that have soaked up paraffin products catch fire easily. Do not smoke or go near open flames, and wash fabrics often.
- It can make baths, showers and floors slippery.
- Avoid the eyes and do not use on infected or weeping skin unless advised.
Overdose
Using too much on the skin is not harmful but may feel greasy. If swallowed in small amounts it is unlikely to cause harm; larger amounts may cause diarrhoea. Seek medical advice if a child swallows a large amount.
Therapeutic Class
Emollient and skin protectant.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and away from flames. Keep the lid closed. Keep out of reach of children.
